Celebrating 2 Years

So Adoring Winnipeg turned 2 on July 18th, 2020 and, as promised, here’s my blog all about what I’ve learned on this 2 year journey of mine. It’s been filled with countless challenges in every aspect of life and this post goes over them a bit. There may be some things you don’t agree with, but here’s my story and my thoughts.

Hustle… Oh that word. While it’s been given a positive spin lately, to me, it brings on feelings of never being able to do enough and never being allowed to stop and slow down.

I’ve been told countless times while building this business that if I truly loved it, I would work on it every waking hour and for the longest time, I believed that. I was led to feel like I wasn’t passionate enough and my business would never survive because I wasn’t hustling hard enough.

But, here’s the thing; I have a day job that keeps me working 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, plus commute time. By the time I get home from that job, I have to rush to make supper for my 2 young children. Then it’s cleaning the kitchen, giving them baths and spending maybe, at most, 1 hour of time with them before they go to bed. This then leaves me with 2 hours after they go to bed to prepare for the next day, have time with husband and get in any time for myself to workout, shower, etc. Weekends are cleaning the house, laundry, groceries, getting a few extra hours in with my kids and, if I’m lucky, time with family and friends.

*Please know that I am not complaining. I’m very grateful for the life I have. It’s just me being completely transparent with you all.

With all of that being said, time spent working on my business usually cuts into time with my kids, my husband or workouts, which are all incredibly important to me (shout out to my husband for helping with the house work). So no, I don’t work on my business every “free” moment I have. For me, it’s not realistic and that’s ok. It just means my growth will be slower and I have come to accept that.

I’ve always been transparent with my situation and often get asked how I balance everything. Here are some tools I use:

  • Plan
  • Pivot
  • Patience
PLAN

I plan everything. Literally everything. I plan our meals for the week before I purchase groceries so there’s no guessing or wasting time with “what do you want to eat?” “I don’t know, what do you want?” come meal times. I plan and pre-schedule every post. I plan what hours I’ll dedicate to the business that week and what I’ll be working on during that time, etc. I have lists upon lists to the point that my husband says that I’m “an Amy” (from Brooklyn 99). I know lists aren’t for everyone but they help me keep everything running and make sure I don’t forget anything.

PIVOT

Pivoting is huge. It’s scary and it can even be embarrassing and make you feel like you don’t know what you’re doing, but it can be essentially to your success. When it becomes obvious that something that I’m doing isn’t working, I know it’s time take another look at things. I’ve already done this a few times. As I grow, I see what works and what doesn’t and pivot to adjust. This does not mean throwing the idea out and starting over, I’ve never changed my main goal and vision of Adoring Winnipeg but I’ve made changes to better serve myself and to better serve my members and followers. Actually, watch for another blog post soon explaining my latest pivot, which is going to be quite significant.

PATIENCE

In this case, I mean patience with yourself. Starting a business is not easy and, in my experience, it only gets harder as it grows. At this point, I do everything for this business. I created and maintain the website, I write all my social media posts, I write all my blogs, I do every single thing you see and everything you don’t. Clear Quartz Creative created my logo and branding but besides that, it’s all me. That’s a lot to take on and a lot to learn. I still work every day at being patient with myself. Every time I want to try something new or update something, it usually means learning how to do it while I’m doing it, which means it will take a long time. Also, sometimes deadlines are missed as life happens. While I struggle with it being totally unprofessional and hating when it happens, it’s another area where patience with myself comes into play. I am alone in this business. If I miss a day, there’s no one there to pick up the slack, so I have to be ok with the fact that I will make mistakes and miss deadlines and forget things and get sick or need a rest day. It’s a hard concept for me to wrap my head around but I am only human and these things will happen.

So to conclude, I have learned to be patient with myself and know that completing tasks and growing the business will take me more time and that I’m human, mistakes will happen. Since I know things will take me longer and time allotted to working on my business is limited, I have leaned to plan and schedule to stay on top of tasks. If I get to a point where these tasks can no longer be accomplished in the time I have, or aren’t working in favour of the growth of my business, I pivot and make changes accordingly.

My business is still young and I don’t know if you can even call it a success yet, but it’s been 2 years and I’m proud of it and of me.
